Educational Series on Legal Issues
The Faribault Area Senior Center, along with the Southern MN Regional Legal Services (SMRLS), is offering a joint educational series on legal issues that concern seniors. The following classes are FREE to the community and will be held in the Senior Center's dining room. Pre-registration is required by calling the Senior Center, minimum class size is 10.

 

CONCILIATION COURT
Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
A volunteer attorney will educate seniors on how to take someone to conciliation court, otherwise known as "small claims court", the limits of conciliation court and how to present your case.

 

CONSUMER CREDIT: GOOD AND BAD
Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.
Do you know how to get your free credit report? What do you do if you don't agree with the report? Has a credit agency ever threatened to garnish your income? What income can they garnish? How can I avoid garnishment and harassment of creditors? A volunteer attorney will make a presentation on these issues and more. Get your questions answered.

Encore Academy
                           ...where learning continues
 
   ...is a program designed for adult learners, promoting life-long learning and personal enrichment. Offered in a visiting lecture style, topics will appeal to a broad range of participants. Discuss new ideas, take on the great questions, and increase your understanding. No previous formal education is required. No exams, no grades. Cost is $5/person with payment due at registration.

Grandma & Me Tea Party

Thursday, August 21, 2008  ~  2:00 p.m.  ~  Ticket Cost: $4

   The Faribault Senior Center would like to invite all older adults in the community to this special intergenerational event. Any grandma, great-grandma, aunt, other older relative or friend is invited to bring a special little girl for an afternoon of fun. There will be fancy treats and a cute program put together by the Buckham Library's Children's Librarian, Delane James. Come dressed in your finest -which includes white gloves, tiaras, and boas!

   Tickets are available at FASC and must be purchased prior to the tea party in order to save a seat. Deadline to purchase your tickets is by Friday, August 15th. Senior Center membership is not required.

Tai Chi for Beginners 

with Joyce Grabowski, Certified Instructor

   Tai Chi encompasses a wide range of styles and forms. This program was developed by Dr. Paul Lam, a family physician who has experienced the signs of osteoarthritis. Tai Chi for Arthritis has been endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation of America. Cost is $20/person for each 6-week course.

DAY TRIPS:
Minnesota State Fair Trip:
Thursday, August 28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
   The Minnesota Outstanding Senior Ceremony is the highlight of the day. Rice County Fair winners will be entered in this contest. There's always a lot to enjoy at the State Fair; from the exhibits, to the entertainment on the plaza and throughout, and of course, the food! Cost is a reasonable $23 for age 65 and over and $26 for under 65, including motorcoach transportation and entrance into the fair. Prepayment is required. Let someone else do the driving and parking, but hurry, our space is nearly filled!

 

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and Minnetonka Apple Orchard: September 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
   The Arboretum is celebrating its 50 Anniversary this year and has lots to offer. We'll begin our day with time to explore the grounds, including the rose garden and beautiful fall flowers and foliage. We'll break for lunch on our own at the cafeteria, then board our own bus for a guided tour 1000-acre of the arboretum grounds. Hopefully, the autumn foliage will be beautiful! We'll finish our afternoon at the Minnetonka Orchards, located in Minnetriska. The Apple Barn and Gift Shop feature many different varieties of apples as well as autumn gifts and decorating items. Treat yourself to a famous apple donut or piece of apple pie. Total cost for the day is $28 for transportation, admission to the arboretum and the tour.

 

Little House on the Prairie Musical at the Guthrie Theater:
Saturday, October 18 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. [Matinee performance]
   Melissa Gilbert stars as Ma Engels in this wonderful performance. Please eat lunch early as lunch is not included. Cost is $49 for transportation and the performance.

House on the Rocks & Warren Cranberry Festival:

   Thursday afternoon will be spent at the House on the Rock, recently remodeled to make tours of the complex less difficult. The House, built on a rock is fascinating, as are the themed rooms, rooms filled with eclectic collections. We'll overnight at the Country Inn and Suites in Mauston. After breakfast we'll move on to the Cranberry Festival at Warrens. We can shop at the Farmers Market, the Antique and Flea Market and the Art and Craft Show, as well as take in many of the scheduled events. Optional Marsh tours can be purchased individually. Flyers are available. Price is reasonable at $199, which includes transportation, breakfast, fully escorted, lodging, admission and baggage handling. Make your reservation soon. One bus limit.

 

Branson Holiday Music Tour, Branson, MO:
November 8 - November 12
   We have been invited to join Larry Rysavy (formerly Larry's Concertina Band) and the Out-of-Town Czechs for this very special Branson tour. Featured is the music of Larry and the band on our first and last nights, spent in Omaha. In addition to a complete Branson holiday tour featuring five great shows, including the Dixie Stampede Christmas Dinner Show, Brett Family Singers, The Pierce Arrow Christmas Show, The Presley's, and Shoji Tabuchi.
   All breakfasts and four dinners are included. Granny Basketball

    
     Remember the early days of women's basketball? The times when there were six players on a team and you could only dribble twice before you had to pass the ball? If you are a woman 50 years or over and interested in playing this form of basketball again, we want to talk to you.
     There is currently a group of women who are seeking additional members for a team or two of Granny Basketball players from Faribault. (You might have seen a recent Daily News article on this program.) If you are considering being part of this group, call the Senior Center to put your name on an interest list. Team organizers will contact you with more information or answer your questions.
